The Road To Emmaus

Be the first person to recommend this.
"That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus' disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And  it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. He asked them, 'What were you discussing as you walk along?' One of them, Cleopas, said to Him in reply, 'Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?'  They said to Him, 'The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty ...

Without A Doubt

"Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, 'We have seen the Lord.' But he said to them, 'Unless I see the mark of the nails in His hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.' Now a week later His disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, 'Peace be with you.' Then He said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it in my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.'   Thomas answered and said to Him, 'My Lord ...

The Triumph of Easter

Be the first person to recommend this.
" After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from Heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow. The guards were shaken with fear of him and became like dead men. Then the angel said to the women in reply, 'Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for He has been raised just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disciples, 'He has been raised from ...

" I have not rebelled, I have not turned my back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my bears; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame." --[ Isaiah 50: 4-7]. On Palm Sunday all around the globe, Christians meditated on this Reading, and they read the story of Jesus' Passion, as told in Matthew 26: 14- 27:66. Some years on Palm Sunday, I cry as if I were at a funeral. Some years, I rejoice at the triumphant procession into Jerusalem as, all along the way,  jubilant on-lookers wave ...

Raising Lazarus

Be the first person to recommend this.
" Now a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. . . The sisters sent word to Jesus, saying, 'Master, the one you love is ill.' When Jesus heard this, He said, 'This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified.' . . Jesus told the disciples, 'Master, if he is asleep, he will be saved.' But Jesus was talking about his death, while they thought that He meant ordinary sleep. So then, Jesus said to them clearly, 'Lazarus has died. I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe. Let us go to him.' When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already been ...

Right Vs. Light

Be the first person to recommend this.
" Brothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says, 'Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.' " -[Ephesians 5: 8-14]. As a girl, I lived in a sweet little Cape-Colonial style home in a leafy suburb. ...

The Woman at the Well

Be the first person to recommend this.
" Jesus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to this son Joseph. Jacob's well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, 'Give me a drink.' His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to Him, 'How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?' --For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.-- Jesus answered and said to her, 'If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink', you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.' ...

Lightness Of Being

Be the first person to recommend this.
" After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up to a high mountain by themselves. There, He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as the light. Just then, there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said, to Jesus, 'Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters -- one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, 'This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!' "- [Matthew 17: 1-5]. ...

Tempted

Be the first person to recommend this.
" At that time, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards He was hungry. The tempter approached Him, 'If You are the Son of God, command these stones become loaves of bread.' He said in reply, 'It is written: One does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God .' Then the devil took Him to the holy city, and made Him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to Him, ' If You are the Son of Man, throw yourself down.' . . Jesus answered him, ' Again it is written, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.' Then, the ...

The Forgotten Child

Be the first person to recommend this.
"Zion said, 'The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.' Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you. " -- [Isaiah 49: 14-15]. As we grow older, we often look back on our younger days, as a deep well of unconditional Love, a source of inmost confidence, and a trove of precious memories. I am always envious of people who can look back on the happy memories of their childhood. This is not something I ever had. Instead, I was abandoned, rejected, threatened with ostracization, belittled and disparaged. I was called ugly on a daily basis. I was hit. I was ...

Cherish No Grudge

Be the first person to recommend this.
" The Lord said to Moses, 'Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God am holy. You shall not bear hatred for your brother or sister in your heart. Though you may have to reprove your fellow citizen, do not incur sin because of him. Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against any of your people. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.' " -[ Leviticus 19: 1-2, 17-18]. My family growing up seemed to judge others and bear grudges. If someone was different than us-- perhaps being a person of color, an immigrant or a laborer-- my family would disparage them. Then, they would reject them, barely speaking to them. They would gossip behind that ...

Mysterious Wisdom

Be the first person to recommend this.
" Brothers and sisters: We speak a wisdom to those who are mature, not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away. Rather, we speak God's wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age knew; for, if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written: What eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love Him, this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God." --[1 Corinthians 2: 6-10]. ...

Rescuing Jesus

Be the first person to recommend this.
"Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord shall answer, you shall cry for help, and He will say: 'Here I am!' If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for ...

Sermon on the Mount

Be the first person to recommend this.
"Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were noble of birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no human being might boast before God. . . . So, as it is written, 'Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.' " - [1 Corinthians 1: 26-31]. In Matthew 5, Jesus went up to the mountain and began to teach His disciples. One of the most famous components of His ...

The Land of Gloom

Be the first person to recommend this.
" Anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness: for there is no gloom, where but now there was distress. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shown. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before you as at the harvest. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster, you have smashed." -[Isaiah 8: 23- 9:3]. In this Scripture passage, Isaiah warns of conditions where corruption by the rulers has generated weakness, and infighting in its leadership; and where the poor have suffered from class disparity. ...

Faithless In America

"Listen to me, you coastlands, hear this, you distant nations! The Lord called me before I was born, while in my mother's womb He named me. . . And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be His servant, to bring Jacob back to Him, for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord, and my God has become my strength-- He says, 'It is too small a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.' Martin Luther King's birthday is celebrated this year on January 16, 2017. We live in a far, far different world than it was in April, 1968, when Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed. Perhaps we tend to think that a man such as King was merely a man of his time? But, true visionaries speak Wisdom that is timeless. Yes, King did write about a specific, anguished time in American history. But I find that many of King's writings are startling prescient. What would Martin Luther King, Jr. think about our world today? Certainly, he would barely recognize the vast extent of our technology. WHAT King said about Technology: "Science and technology have ...

The Power of Yes

Be the first person to recommend this.
" The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them, in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told them." --[ Luke 2: 16-21.] We live in an extremely negative world -- have you noticed? Negative makes the nightly news, the video stream, the online headlines. What is positive lately rates barely a mention. ...

Christmas Message

" In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and thenWord was God. He [Jesus] was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through Him [God], and without Him, nothing came to be. What came to be through Him was life, and this life was the light of the human race: the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. . . .The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through Him, but the world did not know Him. He came to what was His own, but His own people did not accept Him. But to those who did accept Him, He gave the power to become the children ...

God of The Possible

"This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.'
